been associated with the nra and indicated their new openness to gun laws have not been the house republicans who would have to vote on a measure. i think it continues to be a very tough task in washington to get federal legislation through the house, that the president could sign on, and not impossible, but i just don't see the kind of movement and outrage that we have seen elsewhere reflected in that important body. now, we do have the nra having a press conference on friday, promising to propose measures. that could be very significant, if they did something, some significant movement that might encourage republican legislators to move on this as well. i think it is a tough battle and that's one reason the white house has been pretty gingerly -- moved gingerly in laying out exactly what it is the president is willing to do. >> lynn, as you know, jay carney said yesterday the president would actively support dianne feinstein's deal to ban assault weapons. he also used the phrase 16 times. how do you balance issues like this? you have the fiscal cliff, you have the new cabinet, t

thanks for being with us. i want to start with this. your reaction to the nra and you heard of lapierre's statement to the nra. what's your thought on the plan put out there to put guns in schools. >> first, richard, thank you for having me. my reaction to the statement yesterday is that i'm disappointed, but not surprised, candidly, and i think we have to stay very focused here and not be put off by the kind of distraction that was put forth yesterday. we certainly need to have concrete plans to make sure our schools are safe, but the notion of adding more guns as a solution is wrong minded and we shouldn't be distracted by the comments yesterday. this is what i believe they were. >> how practical is the idea put forth? the department of labor saying that the average salary for a police officer is about $55,000. there's about 100,000 public schools across the country and it would mean $5 billion if the plan were to be carried out. >> i don't think there's anything more precious than our kids so we do need to make sure that we change and have plans to address school safety, but i don't

big following in florida with the nra i can see that. looking at their website you know, and everyone looks at florida as far as concealed weapon permits i think it has tripled over the last few years. i know the nra has over four million members. people want to bear arms. i upt stand that. people want to have concealed weapons now. when i say it is a problem not just the state of florida. i see that as a problem states are operating as individual countries. when you go to europe, you know, the size is around the same but you see each state size is a country in europe. we are operating like a country. each state if colorado wants marijuana then they goat et it. if florida wants to have guns. was i was growing up i noticed that the federal government stepped in more. the lawmakers were accountable. if you went too mar in yofar in state the federal government slapped you back a little bit. when president obama came into arizona he got a stern talking to. and he's a chief of the country and he has a finger in his face. we have to have the respect for our leaders. the best that we can do
